the ceo of this company greg koch swindled and hurt the music scene in san francisco.
he used to manage a place called downtown rehearsal which was a home to about 500 bands. the building was bought and he notified the tenants that he had negotiated a new lease with the owners and would be doubling the rent to make much needed improvements.
what he neglected to state was that the new owner was his father. he never actually made any improvemnets in the next year and then his father sold the building for over the ten times the price he purchased it for in the real estate boom of the dot bomb.
this created a situation where over 2000 musicians were evicted from their practice spaces. many musicians were forced to leave the city for low rents. this diminished the music scene in san francisco greatly. the rehearsal space real estate has never really recovered and there are slowly forming movements of music to revitalize our city.
so not only did he double the rents but he threw out the musicians for the sake of greed.
i believe that he is still banned from many bars and clubs in san frnacisco.

Re: why you should not support this beer
Mon, January 26, 2004 - 2:12 PMAnother reason not to support is that they did the same thing to Speakeasy Ales and Lagers. They said they were not going to oust them when they bought the bulding where speakeasy originally resided in. They said they were going to keep things the way they were. They then evicted them and forced them to race to find a new space so they could sell the property at 400 times the original value. -

Re: why you should not support this beer
Tue, January 27, 2004 - 3:54 PMHaving spoken with Mr. Koch via email, as well as some musicians and researched the stories further. I believe the media has given this man a raw deal. Contact him yourself via the Stone Brewing Co.s website if you want to hear it from his own lips.

Wed, January 28, 2004 - 4:01 PMWith all due respect, I am still new to tribe and how to use it properly. Reprimanding me does nothing. Live and learn. Besides I am doing my part to retract my shared statement with J. -

Re: why you should not support this beer
Wed, January 28, 2004 - 10:25 PMwell.. whether its true or not, it made me think twice about ordering one. stone brewery has gotten pretty big in the micro-brew bars in nyc, and i've always felt their brews are kind of overrated.
but i attended a magic hat beer fest tonight that had a very lame beer list, most of which was gone by the time i got there, and ocnsidered getting an arrogant.. but stuck to the victory golden monkeys instead beacuse of this thread, and becasuse i like it better anyways.

Fri, October 24, 2008 - 2:11 AMGod damn right, Kent. Just what I was gonna say... for the most part. They're a big company cause they make good beer. Real good beer. Not to mention, they've got a ridiculously awesome mascot.
But, ya know... some people's gotsta get their panties in a bunch about something.

Re: why you should not support this beer
Tue, January 20, 2009 - 10:00 AMWell, if the SF music scene is anything like the one in Cleveland, which I suspect it is, 95% of those bands suck total ass and this guy probably did everyone a favor.
Additionally, he created business opportunities for those wishing to establish their own rehearsal spaces.
Shut up and drink beer.
